Pride Began Here in 1969
We’re Still Showing Up

From its beginnings in 1969 to the present day, Pride has always been about visibility, resilience, and community. That spirit continues at The Stonewall Inn with every celebration, every conversation, and every unforgettable night.

The History

In 1969, The Stonewall Inn became the backdrop for a moment that changed everything. What began as a stand against discrimination sparked the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement and helped shape a future rooted in visibility, resilience, and equality. That spirit still lives here today, woven into the community, the conversations, and the connections made within these walls.

Stonewall Inn IPA, brewed by Brooklyn Brewery

Since 2017, The Stonewall Inn has partnered with Brooklyn Brewery to create the Stonewall Inn IPA, a bold yet refreshing session IPA brewed in support of the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative (SIGBI). With bright citrus and grapefruit notes, this beer celebrates the courage that sparked the Stonewall Uprising and the progress that continues today.

More than a collaboration, the Stonewall Inn IPA supports LGBTQ+ communities through education, advocacy, and direct support for grassroots organizations, especially those serving youth in underserved areas. Every glass raised helps keep the spirit of Stonewall alive and moving forward.

Turning Stonewall’s Legacy Into Action

The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative (SIGBI) is the official nonprofit arm of The Stonewall Inn, carrying the spirit of the 1969 uprising into real-world support for LGBTQ+ communities everywhere. SIGBI works to eliminate social intolerance and advance equality by funding grassroots organizations, creating educational and awareness programs, and supporting advocacy efforts where progress toward LGBTQ+ rights has been slow or stalled.

How they Act

Through initiatives like Safe Spaces certification, grants, community partnerships, and annual events such as the Brick Awards Gala, SIGBI helps build environments where LGBTQ+ people feel safe, supported, and seen — from big cities to underserved rural areas around the world. Every action, donation, and collaboration helps keep the legacy of Stonewall alive and expands its impact beyond our walls.
